Springtime Moving is Upon Us

It’s that time of year again. The azaleas are blooming, winter gear is becoming a thing of the past, and college seniors are facing the reality of finding a job while battling severe senioritis. Spring! It’s arguably the best time of year (though I prefer Summer).

One strike against Spring is the need to move. Often described as one of the more stressful events in life, nearly every student has to do it sometime between May and June. We want to combat that, and so I’ve put together some resources and tips to help you out.

Since we are primarily in the Triangle, I’m focusing on helping people in Raleigh, Durham, and Chapel Hill; however note that many of these resources can be found locally across North Carolina.

Free Moving Boxes

There are plenty of free places in the Triangle to get free moving boxes. Office supply stores often have boxes they are getting rid of, so it’s worth checking out the Staples locations in Chapel Hill and Raleigh, Office Max in Durham, and other stores like that in your area. There are also ABC package stores throughout the Triangle, and you don’t have to venture far from campus to find bars and restaurants on Franklin Street, Hillsborough Street, or 9th Street in Durham who throw out boxes daily.

Even bookstores get rid of a lot of boxes, so it’s worth getting in touch with UNC, NCSU, or Duke student stores to see if they have any on hand. Lastly, pharmacies often throw out boxes, and there are plenty of those across the Triangle.

Packing Tips

When you’re moving, make sure you use the right size boxes, and pack each box full. Put heavier items on the bottom, and avoid mixing items from different rooms in the same box. Or, you can organize things by category, for example you can put all your Tar Heel or NCSU gear in the same box.

Label each box with the room it came from or the category of stuff in it (eg. “Wolfpack jerseys”). The more organized you are when packing the easier it will be to unpack.
